Family History in Songs
“The history of a people is found in its songs.” – George Jellinek.
These conversations can take your child on a musical tour of your family’s heritage. This can be related to your race(s), ethnicities, faiths. You might want to begin with songs from your childhood that meant a lot to you. Encourage your child to ask grandparents about songs they remember and feel capture something special about your cultural heritage. Are there other people in your neighborhood who can be helpful?
Perhaps select a few ‘historical’ songs to play while you eat dinner? Way into their future, a time will come when they hear family favorites – and all the warm memories of home will rush back. Listening and singing together while they are young is an investment in lifetime connections.
