Since I come from Maine, I go with Cheddah. – SA. Though I am from Massachusetts and not an expert on the North Providence accent, I’ve heard (or not heard) enough dropped Rs in New England to guess your partner is right, at least about the intent. But faking accents is friggin ah-fill — almost worse than phoneticizing them in print.
